A blood transfusion set is a sterile medical device specifically designed for the safe and efficient administration of blood and blood products from a blood bag to a patient's venous system. It includes specialized components that help prevent clot formation, air embolism, and contamination during transfusion.
Drip Chamber with Filter:
Integrated with a 200-micron filter to trap clots, cellular debris, and particulate matter from blood products.
Transparent chamber allows for monitoring of the drip rate and flow consistency.
Vented Spike:
Designed to pierce the blood bag outlet port.
Includes an air vent with a bacterial filter (for use with rigid containers, if needed), allowing for smooth fluid flow.
Tubing:
Flexible, medical-grade PVC tubing that is latex-free and kink-resistant.
Length: typically 150ï180 cm, allowing mobility and secure connection.
Roller Clamp:
Allows precise manual regulation of blood flow rate.
Easy to operate, even when wearing gloves.
Injection/Access Port (Optional):
Allows for the administration of compatible medications if required during transfusion.
Luer Lock or Slip Connector:
Secure end connection to an IV cannula or extension set, preventing leakage or disconnection.
Sterile and Non-pyrogenic
Single-use only to prevent cross-contamination
Does not contain DEHP or latex (in most modern sets)
Should not be used with non-blood IV fluids unless indicated
Whole blood transfusion
Packed red blood cells (PRBCs)
Platelet concentrates or plasma (depending on set design)
Hospital wards, emergency rooms, ICUs, and surgical theaters
